What people need? The freedom of "choice" or "decision"?!!

This random question seems to be bothering me for quite a while now. It started when i heard one of the CEO's of an MNC say in one of his interviews that "people cannot be left to decide what they need; we need to invent stuff and convince people that this is what is missing from their lives". Pompous it seems, at least at first thought. But then give it a second thought. Don't you love reading all the updates on your fb wall from your friends, all the tweets from your favorite stars, all the messages you received on  whatsapp??!! Okay, could you have in first place thought that these seemingly silly activities could give you this much pleasure? May be you could have; and may be you are a geek then. How about some interior designs for your brand new home? Found yourself wanting there? Wouldn't it really be easier if you were allowed to "choose" from a set of existing designs?  May be make it a bit more customized based on your general taste and liking. But asking you to describe the entire design from scratch seems to be a bit too much. So knowingly or unknowingly all of us agreed upon "choosing"; letting a minority of the so-called experts in the field decide what we actually want. And when we  "choose" one thing over the other we get this false notion that we have "decided" what we need.  Okay, so what is the point of this discussion? The  question - how different  things could have been if people were allowed to actually "decide" what they needed instead of "choose" what they needed? Could we have fast-tracked all innovations? Could we be living a better, balanced life since we "decided" how our life should be instead of "choosing" from the available options? Could we have prevented all the first world, second world and third world problems we are facing today?!!
